Sharmistha Gooptu
About: Sharmistha Gooptu is a historian and writer. She is author of Menoka Has Hanged Herself (fiction 2019) and Unspoken (fiction 2023). Her first published monograph was Bengali Cinema: An Other Nation Sharmistha Gooptu completed her B.A. in History from Presidency College, Calcutta and her M.A. from Calcutta University in 2000. She was awarded the Century Fellowship in 2002 at the University of Chicago to do a Ph.D. on the history of Bengali cinema. She completed her doctorate in 2009 and the thesis was published by Routledge in London and New York as the monograph Bengali Cinema: An Other Nation, and in India by Roli Books in 2010. Dr.Gooptu has offered courses at the University of Toronto and was a Visiting Fellow at Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 2012. She is also joint Editor of the Routledge journal South Asian History and Culture and editor of the South Asian History and Culture books series. She has been member of several UGC committees awarding financial assistance to colleges under the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans. An oped columnist for the Times of India, Sharmistha Gooptu has co-curated the book Flashback with Avijit Ghosh and Srijana Mitra Das, launched on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Times of India in October 2013 (the book includes TOI’s coverage of film and entertainment). She has also written for Biblio: A Review of Books, Outlook, Open, Verve and other magazines and websites.
